Utility companies see a spike in power use during the month of December from all the Christmas lights people put up around their homes. Customers also get a bump on their bill at the end of the month. To lower your bill the latest recommendation is switching to LED lights.

Two similar looking trees at the Colorado Springs Utilities conservation center show the energey difference between old school mini lights and modern LED lights. Meters show the old drawing 400 watts of power while the modern lights barely even register. “Really it’s about the money you save,” according to Gabriel Romero with Springs Utilities, “They’re 90% more efficient than incandescent bulbs. So really after one year you’re going to get the payback.”

I read about a lovely project today, where a team of Japanese guys and girls created some lovely solarpowered light. When hung in trees, these lights only came on if there was wind (and dark I suppose).
