Can solar powered Christmas lights be used indoors around a window? ?

July 31st, 2010 by admin

My new solar lights are not very bright and they only shine for about 3 hours instead of the 7 hours they are supposed to.

they need more direct sun light , and they can be used any where you can get the sun light , the longer in sun the longer they run

Are LED christmas lights more reliable than the traditional ones?

July 31st, 2010 by admin

I spent an hour or two fighting with strands of outdoor christmas lights yesterday, trying to find strands that worked, wiggling bulbs to coax the dark ones back to life, etc. I’m about ready to pitch the box full and replace them. I see the LED light strings on the store shelves, but they still have the lights that can be removed, like the traditional strings. I know LEDs are more efficient and use less power, but the design is otherwise very similar to the old ones. Are there LED light strings out there that are designed for outdoor use and that will last a long time without half a string going dark at random? If you’ve had good luck with them, and you’ve got a brand name, pass it along!

My boyfriend prefers the LED lights because they do last longer, they use less electricity to run, and don’t heat up the way the old-fashioned ones do. I’ve held out for a while and have kept using the older ones, but I have a feeling next year he’ll get his way and have the LEDs. (My only complaint about them is that they have a different glow to them than the older ones do… They don’t look the same!)

Most of the people I know who use them have raved about them, though. They’ve said they’ve had good experience with them and that they really do save you money on the power bill.

If you’re interested, I’d suggest trying them – if you don’t like them, you can always go back to the old ones next year.

How can i charge some small items while camping?

July 31st, 2010 by admin

Hello I am going outdoor camping for a week with some family and friends (6 nights)and will be deep in the woods with no power. I want to be able to power a few small Christmas lights and charge my phone and iPod while there. I have heard that you can purchase a power inverter and 12volt batteries can this work. My question is
1)How would I go about hooking everything up
2)What size power inverter do I need
3)How many batteries will I need to power this set up
4)Should I buy a solar charger to recharge the batteries (if yes what size) or just make my bank bigger

The lights will be on for about 2 hours a day and I will be using 3 traditional strings of lights (not led)aprox 25 watts each. The phone and iPod just need to be charged every other night but there will be 4 phones and 1 iPod

Thank you for your help

Why not enjoy the experience of camping in the deep woods without all the electrical gadgetry? If you plan on using traditional lights you are going to need a 12v car battery plus the inverter. The car battery might be a little heavy in the back pack but if you’re a big guy, no problem. Even with a solar panel you still need the battery for storage. (actually you could probably get by with a motorcycle battery). Depending on the part of the country you live, there are probably fairly remote places where you can drive in and have your car near by for a source of power for your gizmos.
