I would like to point out, this is not original to Digi-key, Graffiti Research Lab came up with the idea of sticking LEDs on coin cells, then adding magnets and sticking them on buildings. This is basically the same, minus the magnet.

The battery is a large mass and it takes a lot of hear to solder to a battery, plus you need to be careful not to damage the battery by over heating it. I would suggest staying with the electrical tape.

Also, would solder work as a substitute for electrical tape? Or would that be dangerous?

You would need to …
You would need to use two AA batteries in series. Stack one battery on top of the other or you could use Digi-Key cell holder SBH-321AS-ND, this has a builtin switch and would provide the 3 volts needed to turn on the LED.
