8 Channel PIC Micro-controller Embedded Christmas Light Controller (LED Polarity Control)

February 7th, 2011 by admin
Another post from Solar Christmas Lights.

This is an overview video of an embedded systems prototype I made to control 8 physical AC channels (or 16 channels when used with polarity sensitive LED strings). Uses a PIC 16C745 (older UV Erasable PIC) optocouplers, TIRAC, and an AC-to-DC power supply.

Arduino Uno Based Christmas Light Controller

February 7th, 2011 by admin
Another post from Solar Christmas Lights.

Using an Arduino Uno to control my 8 strings of Christmas lights. I wrote the code from scratch myself. I used 8 solid state relays to switch the AC power to the strings. They are not LED Christmas lights, they’re normal incandescent mini bulbs. I used a 74hc595 shift register to run the 7 segment LED display which shows the current mode, but the light relays are run directly off the mainboard without a shift register. I added the binary mode for an extra geeky touch. More details on my website:

PLC Tutorial – FIFO Shift Registers Tutorial

July 19th, 2010 by admin
Another post from Solar Christmas Lights.

This PLC shift registers tutorial by http://www.bin95.com explains the common programmable logic control function called FIFO. This is just a small, low resolution sample from DVD 9 of the 10 DVD PLC Training Video Course Library. The actually DVDs have much better quality and details.
(FIFO is First In, First Out control data.)

Industries that might be interested in this video are …

Manufacturing, Aerospace, Printing Industry, Food Industry, Textile, Corrugating, Plastics Industry, Foundries and similar industries using industrial controls.

Examples of machines PLCs control are …
Complete manufacturing system, manufacturing plant, extruder, silo, corrugators, converting machine, remote water pump stations, Offset press, CNC, lathe, Filling machine, industrial washing machine, textile shrinkage system, boiler, fabrication, refining, vision systems, motion control, assembly machine, stamping machine, packaging equipment, injection molding, robots, HVAC, temperature control, air compressors, strapper, stretch wrap machine and other warehouse equipment like conveyors, palletizers, sorters etc.

Some widely used, but lesser known uses of the PLC are …
Escalator, safety control, lifts, elevators in the travel industry and others. Use for Boilers and fan changeover systems in hospitals might be know, but they also control incinerators. They are also used in the film industry and agriculture, even in space stations. Also used in vacation spots for train control, roller coaster ride (amusement rides), lighting fixtures, ships, and other automation control. They control cities, water treatment, electrical power transmission (nuclear, wind turbine, wind farms, and solar too), bridges, tunnel air, civil defense siren systems, oil and gas pipelines and traffic lights.

When people say “Computers control the world we live in.” they don’t know most is by a little, fast and highly reliable computer called a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller).

Note: Rare uses of the PLC are Christmas lights, pinball machine, 55 gallon drum barbeque, home security, model train sets, dance room lighting and garage door openers.

People who may find this video of value are …
Students, electricians, technicians and technologists, engineers, OEM, machine builders, system integrators, maintenance personnel, maintenance managers, maintenance women, women engineers, field service technicians, electrical contractors, electrical consultants, facility managers, instrumentation technicians, I&E personnel, I&E supervisors, industrial tradesman, and oh yea… the BP oil refinery maintenance department. How To Make a Solar Charging Bag

April 13th, 2010 by admin
Another post from Solar Christmas Lights.

Watch this video for a demonstration of “How To Make a Solar Charging Bag”. To complete the task, you will need:

Solar-powered garden lights
A flat-head screwdriver
A Phillips-head screwdriver

Get started with the first step: Carefully remove the solar panel from the light fixture with a screwdriver. It should have two wires soldered to a rechargeable battery. Detach the wires using the wire cutters, and strip the ends with the wire strippers.

For the complete guide, go to http://www.howcast.com/videos/271702-How-To-Make-a-Solar-Charging-Bag
